Rhythm Workshop for Drummers and Dancers

Rhythm Workshop for Drummers 11:00 – 1:00 pm (2 hours)

Well-notated handouts will be provided for all of the rhythms presented at the workshop.
Bring your doumbeq (Some drums available to use in class).

“Walking” maqsoum with variations.

Nawwari (gypsy) family of rhythms: nawwari, three-doum saidi and filled-in baladi.

Moroccan twelve eight rhythm with a variety of overlay patterns introducing the concept of polyrhythms.


Cymbal and Rhythms Workshop for Dancers 2:00 – 4:30 pm (2-1/2 hours)

This workshop is designed to be informative and useful for dancers and dance students of all levels. Well-notated handouts will be provided for all of the rhythms presented at the workshop. Bring finger cymbals (finger cymbals available for sale – arrive early to purchase and affix elastic).

Cymbal technique including the sometimes elusive muted technique.

Exercises to strengthen the hands, facilitate transitions between basic patterns, and connect dance steps with cymbals.

Thorough treatment of maqsoum and “walking” maqsoum rhythms, a major rhythm in belly dance, with common overlay patterns.

Differentiating among three related rhythms: baladi, saidi and maqsoum.

Bolero and wahida rhythms with variations – good for slower sections of dance performances.

“Drama Day” Um Kalthoum---Horacio will teach to !Alf Leyla Wa Leyla", one of his favorite pieces and an all time favorite with all people who love Arabic/Egyptian music, it is elegant, dramatic without tears, emotional and strong.

“Drama Day” For the raks sharqi I was planning to work with music that Yasmina recorded in Cairo with her musicians. They are not studio musicians, it is not a perfect recording BUt it has WONDERFUL Egyptian feeling. I feel like I am in Cairo in a club when I hear it. It is called "El Warda", the rose. It is peppy, yet elegant with dramatic rhythm changes which are challenging - I love that!! We need a rectangular veil.

“Humour Day” Baladi--hah, songs for baaad girls! I will use something from Saad Soughrair who is really good for dancing. The steps will work for many songs, the style is currant, it is more about the style, like every movement has to be in a certain style to match the movement. A camel f.e. is different if the music is raks sharqi, folkore or baladi. It is still a camel but appears to be very different. I want to explain what makes a movement Baladi, to be up on the half point but veeeeery relaxed at the same time. All movements can be "recycled" for any such song.

“Humor Day and Elegance Day” Rhythms-- each rhythm appears in certain music and has movements that are typical for it. We will do a variety of steps that belong to certain rhythms, once for when one music instruments dominates and once for "tutti", full orchestra. After that there will be no Masmoudi Kabir that you cannot choreograph or dance to!

“Wild Woman Day” Drum Solo--hot, wild, controlled craziness!!

“Elegance Day and Wild Woman Day” With the Burlesque Dance we want work with both oriental and tribal dancers. You need a good base in oriental, because it has a lot of oriental technique but of course with slight changes and different music. Participants need technique, stamina, high heels, and give themselves permission to let it all out!! I promise extreme (!!) fun and sore muscles.

Humour Day, Elegance Day Ballet--this class is especially for the oriental or tribal dancer to improve understandng of line, posture, direction, balance (for smooth controlled movement). There will be no high extensions or jumps, ok for all ages and bodies!

Drama Day and Wild Woman Day Floor Barre and Stretch-- Floor Barre means "ballet lying down". Perfect to find inner muscles without worrying about balance and gravity! Also very helpful when you are injured or have muscle or back problems, please bring a towel or mat!!
