Musicality & Movement Workshop 1: Saturday, March 10, 2018 2:00 – 4:30 pm Fee: $25
Workshop 1: Turkish songs from Omar Faruk Tekbilek

The workshop series is an opportunity to enhance your understanding of Middle Eastern music and gain confidence for dancing. Each workshop in the series will focus on several popular Middle Eastern pieces of music. The instructor will provide through focused listening and discussion - information about the music: cultural context, rhythms, instrumentation, singing and emotional message. Ma*Shuqa Method notation and structure will give dancers a way to understand, capture the feeling, and move improvisationally to the music. Movement matching musicality is the goal and process for learning how to perform to the music. Dance instruction includes a variety of dance styles from cabaret to tribal, and ideas for troupe performances.

Workshop 1: Turkish songs from Omar Faruk Tekbilek   Bring your finger cymbals, notebooks, veils, fan veils and be ready to listen, learn, understand, and try your hand at different dance styles in Turkish music: Andalusian, Egyptian, Cabaret, Tribal, and moves for troupe dancing. Learn to coordinate musicality with dance movements, for example: stylized veil movements, undulations with flowing veil, shimmies with traveling steps. How to dance to different instruments: zurna, oud, kanun, ney, bass, kemanche, requito, bandola, guitar, tanbour, santur, bendir, darbuka. 

Workshop 1 Turkish Music & Dance Instruction Elements:
1. Discuss “cultural context” meaning of the songs, and appropriate dancing style: Andalusian, tribal, dervish

2. Define musical phrasing, and finger cymbal patterns

3. Note rhythms and dance style: 5/8, 9/2, 4/4, 6/4, and 2/4

4. Musical structure and styling and maqamat: Kurdi, Hijaz, Nikriz, Mahur, and Huzzam

 5. Discuss the instrumentation and the vocals (e.g. solo, chorus – call and answer)

6. Apply Ma*Shuqa Method structure and instruction for dance movement and dance styling, movement combinations, fan veil: matching musicality and rhythms e.g. movement flow, traveling steps.

 7. Dancers each solo (or if many enrolled – two at a time) improvise to a short section of the song(s).

Musicality & Movement Workshop 2: April 21, 2018 2:00 – 4:30 pm, $25
Workshop 2: Lebanese and Oriental Occidental music by Georges Lammam

Workshop 2 features Opus Omnia and Oriental Occidental music by Georges Lammam Bring finger cymbals, veils, notebooks and listen, learn, and understand the music composed by Georges Lammam. Then try your hand dancing different dance styles and learn to coordinate musicality with dance movements, for example: stylized veil movements, undulations with flowing veil, shimmies with traveling steps. Georges music provides the opportunity to fuse and incorporate: Andalusian/Flamenco styling, and Hawaiian/Polynesian styling. How to dance to different instruments: violin, oud, kanun, ney, doumbeq, violin taxim, ukulele, bass, kanun, and guitar. Try creative movement styling to a violin taxim that sounds like a Japanese koto. Try your hand at playing finger cymbals in syncopated rhythmic styling with guitar and finger cymbals on the recording. 

Workshop 2 Lebanese and Oriental Occidental - Instructional Elements:
1. Discuss “cultural context” meaning of the songs, and appropriate dancing style: Andalusian/Spanish Flamenco, tribal, Hawaiian,

2. Define musical phrasing, and finger cymbal patterns

3. Note rhythms and dance style: Wahda 4/4, and Ayub 2/4

4. Musical structure and styling: Fast Taxim in Dalaa style, maqam scale runs, leit motifs.

5. Musicality and dance dynamics of magical maqam patterns in a taxim full of drama and depth of feeling from musical dynamics from varying tones, sound levels, and timing.

6. Discuss the instrumentation, musicality, and the vocals (e.g. solo, chorus – call and answer)

7. Apply Ma*Shuqa Method structure and instruction for dance movement and dance styling, movement combinations, fan veil: matching musicality and rhythms e.g. movement flow, traveling steps.

8. Dancers each solo (or if many enrolled – two at a time) improvise to a short section of the song(s).

Musicality & Movement Workshop 3: Arabic Music of Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen Saturday, May 5, 2018 2:00 – 4:30 pm, $25
Workshop 3 features music by Nazir Latouf - Arabic Music of Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen
Bring finger cymbals, veils, notebooks and listen, learn, and understand the music from the Arabian Passion CD by Nazir Latouf. This CD was recorded “live” – so you can try your hand dancing different dance styles and learn to coordinate musicality with dance movements, for example: stylized veil movements, undulations with flowing veil, shimmies with traveling steps. Nazir’s music provides the opportunity to learn about the differences between Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian, Yemenese, and Egypt music and styling. Learn to dance to different instruments: violin, oud, kanun, ney, doumbeq, bass, kanun, and guitar. Try creative movement styling and try your hand at playing finger cymbals in syncopated rhythmic styling with guitar and finger cymbals on the recording.

Workshop 3: Arabic Music of Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen Instructional Elements:
1. Discuss “cultural context” meaning of the songs, and appropriate dancing style: Dynamic taxim, debke line dancing to davul

2. Define musical phrasing, and finger cymbal patterns

3. Note rhythms and dance style: Maksum Wahda 4/4, Nawari, Khaleegy, Ayub 2/4

4. Musical structure and styling: Soulful solo oud and mawwal singing, maqam scale runs, leit motifs. Syrian musicality dynamics and depth mirroring nuances and changes in the musical quality by dancing with undulations and dramatic pauses

5. Musicality and dance dynamics of magical maqam patterns in a taxim full of drama and depth of feeling from musical dynamics from varying tones, sound levels, and timing. Learn to match the masterful vocalization in this piece; e.g. overlay dance movements with undulations with shimmies

6. Discuss the instrumentation, musicality, and the vocals (e.g. solo, chorus – call and answer). Learn about instrumental development of maqams after the initial “mis-en scene” (which others call mergence) in a Lebanese piece.

7. Learn about musical and dance pacing, lilting phrasing, and musical development in graceful flowing movement with veils and into poses.

8. Try dancing Khaleegy style movement to a Syrian song composed by Nazir.

9. Study a joyful Jordanian song with an upbeat Maqsum and fascinating keyboard with varying instrumental sounds played with syncopated accents.

10. Learn about uulations/saghareets – different types and styles, and how these sounds and shouts fit in performance.

11. Apply Ma*Shuqa Method structure and instruction for dance movement and dance styling, movement combinations, fan veil: matching musicality and rhythms e.g. movement flow, traveling steps.

12. Perfect opportunity to learn how to improvise and layer your movement with dynamic flow and shimmies. Dancers each solo (or if many enrolled – two at a time) improvise to a short section of the song(s).
